Music: it used to be cool

Have you ever noticed that music and everything about it has changed over the last decade? I mean, Im not going to say that it has become corrupted (although if thats a better way of putting it, then everything’s become corrupted then, hasn’t it?), but I mean, I just feel like things have changed with the times, and not in the way that most have expected.

Back in 1994, when you heard of a band, singer, or group that was just coming out, it was almost strictly by the more simplistic means. Music videos really didnt have the effect on artists like they do now, although by that time, music videos were highly developed “works of art”, per se. Basically, if you were just coming out, the studio and the stage came first and foremost, while the set was saved for either when you had money to spare or alot of free time on your hands.

Back in 1994, ratings and record sales didnt really matter if you were just coming out. If you wanted to make music and release it, you often had to work with a record company, or, you could go indy and ask a few friends who are familiar with making and distributing records on a smallscale level to help you, and THEN maybe the bigger record company might discover you, and next thing you know, youre coming out into the REAL spotlight; however, not as large as the national or world scale that has developed and solidified ever since.

Furthermore, you didnt have to necessarily worry about the ratings or critics reviews, or the “politics”. If people didnt think you were good, they just didnt think you were good, and you were basically forgotten. Now if you arent good, and youre just coming out, theyll still play your music, theyll still keep your name in people’s ears and eyes, even though even you know that you suck.

Frankly Im disgusted with the way things are in music right now. I personally dont want to see the next great band or rapper or singer advertised on my TV screen. I would rather see them in a concert, performing. I would rather listen to their studio music on radio, on my computer (hey, at least its in private…), or on CD in the car.

Now look: the whole thing about “beefs” and feuds shouldve stayed within rap/hiphop, and even within that, shouldve died with Biggie and Tupac. However, the media just HAS to stick its nose and prodder stick into the lives of everyone/thing/ventriloquist’s-dummy that they stick on top of a sceptre for all the world to see.

So its very disgusting, no, pathetically silly to hear about this “beef” between two or three of the most unlikely individuals: Hillary Duff, Avril Lavigne, and Lindsay Lohan (none of whom I care for in any aspect, but I just want to make a joke out of them for an example). I mean come on already? Why would two or three female “teeny-pop” stars have “beef” with each other? I guess it would be something like Hillary or Lindsay saying to Avril “you arent punk rock goth rebel enough!” while Avril is saying “me? i know im more goth rebel teen punk than you are with your Mrs. Prissy Hollywood getup!” (and then one of their cheezy wannabe-black boyfriends says “ohhh, shit! you got served!”) *catfight sounds*

However, I dont think I have covered the eronneous irony and stupidity of the pop music “culture” that permeates our very being, But at least I hope that Ive made a good and leading, yet mere allusion towards it.

So case in point: All I want to do is listen to the music, and feel good about listening to it. Music is more important to me than the artist.

Now Ill get off my soapbox.
