Review of “Chinese Ghost Story: The Tsui Hark Animation”

If you’re a big fan of non-kung-fu-related Chinese cinema, then you should be quite familiar with the works of Tsui Hark (Once Upon a Time in China, Black Mask, Zu Warriors from the Magic Mountain, Chinese Ghost Story).

Well, back in 1997, he made an animated readaption of his 1987 film, Chinese Ghost Story, which was translated into English by VIZ Media. 9 years later, I dug this up from Bittorrent.

And let me just give you a blanket assessment of this in three words:

“Anime on Acid”.

The English dub sucks eggs, but my focus is being paid exclusively to the animation, which is a combination of celluloid and CGI (*alot* of CGI). It’s trippy, its stretchy, its exaggerated, it has its own flavor (which may border for a bit on the distasteful, although there’s nothing “naughty” in the film).

And I have only seen the first half so far (it’s still downloading…..like, a whole GB in this torrent, dammit)!
