Statement regarding the purpose and effect of the technology
(NB: this statement reflects personal opinions of the authors and not of their organizations)

We believe that telepresence technologies in AR, VR and other media are to transform the world in the not-so-distant future. Shifting a part of human life-like communication to the virtual and augmented worlds will have several positive effects. It will lead to a reduction in long-distance travel and short-distance commute. It will democratize education, and improve the quality of life for people with disabilities. It will distribute jobs more fairly and uniformly around the World. It will better connect relatives and friends separated by distance. To achieve all these effects, we need to make human communication in AR and VR as realistic and compelling as possible, and the creation of photorealistic avatars is one (small) step towards this future. In other words, in future telepresence systems, people will need to be represented by the realistic semblances of themselves, and creating such avatars should be easy for the users. This application and scientific curiosity is what drives the research in our group, including the project presented in this video.

We realize that our technology can have a negative use for the so-called “deepfake” videos. However, it is important to realize, that Hollywood has been making fake videos (aka “special effects”) for a century, and deep networks with similar capabilities have been available for the past several years (see links in the paper). Our work (and quite a few parallel works) will lead to the democratization of the certain special effects technologies. And the democratization of the technologies has always had negative effects. Democratizing sound editing tools lead to the rise of pranksters and fake audios, democratizing video recording lead to the appearance of footage taken without consent. In each of the past cases, the net effect of democratization on the World has been positive, and mechanisms for stemming the negative effects have been developed. We believe that the case of neural avatar technology will be no different. Our belief is supported by the ongoing development of tools for fake video detection and face spoof detection alongside with the ongoing shift for privacy and data security in major IT companies.

According to Jeff Jaffers, who co-created amazing immersive experiences with his team at Luscious, current advances in the VR, AR and MR technologies are changing the language of storytelling, which is forcing creators to change the grammar of the film.

For example, with 3DoF (three degrees of freedom), you can only see the camera perspective, whereas 6DoF (six degrees of freedom) lets you move dimensionally through space, just like Google Maps. Only a few months ago, RED and Facebook launched Manifold – a new VR camera for shooting 3D and 360° imagery.

Ok, I’ve been looking for this song for over 5 years. It has been featured in a million commercials, a few documentaries, and on the menu for the Casino DVD. Today, while researching a different song on a library music website, BY CHANCE, I clicked a different song on that collection. It took only ONE note, the big orchestra hit at the opening, to know that I had found it.
This song is called “Superbad”, by “Top Dogz”. I am not sure if this is a producer, or in house band, but I LOVE YOU anyway.
You will not be able to download this song, because of licensing issues, but you can still listen to all its glory.

-Go to Extrememusic.com and click “Get Trax” at the bottom
-Once inside, click on “X-series” on the top, left.
-Click on “Album Name” on the left and wait for the albums to load
-Scroll down to find “Acid Lounge”
-Click it, and wait for the tracks on the right to load.

In 2005, a Taiwanese Daoist priest or fashi (法師) named Lu Weiming (盧威明) claimed to have made spiritual contact with the Rabbit God. Lu often heard complaints from homosexual Taoist adherents that there was no god to answer their prayers. Believing one of his missions was to tend to the needs of people alienated from mainstream society, he set out to revive the forgotten deity and resolved that should 5 same-sex couples approach his temple for prayers or spiritual help, he would establish a new temple specifically dedicated to the Rabbit God.
Although at that time, even though the temple did not have specific programs for gay couples, 5 couples did indeed turn up. The priest took this as a sign and officially established the Rabbit Temple. It is located at No. 12, Alley 37, Yonghe Road Section 1, Yonghe City, Taipei.
Lu feels that the deity can be seen as an alternative to Yue Xia Lao Ren (月下老人, the matchmaker god for heterosexuals). He usually advises gay templegoers not to go to Yue Lao, (the nickname of the matchmaker god), since love affairs between men and women are believed to be his responsibility. The deity would be confused by homosexuals’ prayers and probably say to himself: “The prayer doesn’t seem right. I’ll match you with a woman instead.”
The Rabbit God is perceived to be an affable deity who is willing to assist his followers in every aspect of life. Since he works for Cheng Huang (城隍), the City God, he has both the erudition and social network in the spiritual world to solve any problem mortals have.
Homosexuals may have an edge in the spiritual world because Hu Tianbao is rather self-abased both because of the way he died and the somewhat belittling title of “rabbit”. So if one is willing to believe in him, he will be much more grateful and work harder than other deities.
There are several methods of worshipping, asking for and receiving answers from this divine being, but sincerity is what counts most. For this reason, followers should address the god as Da Ye (大爺), or Master, rather than Rabbit God. Then, those with needs can write down their names, addresses, birthdays and prayers on pieces of paper money and burn them to make sure the messages are sent to heaven.
In another form of worship, personal items can be brought before the alter for Da Ye’s blessings. Some followers believe that blessed skin-care products are more effective and increase the likelihood of romance. Followers can also take fu (符, paper charms) from the temple, place them under a pillow and pray to the deity to fulfill their wishes before going to bed. The praying is meant to encourage contemplation.
Apart from the spiritual side of the sect, Lu is also concerned about the status of homosexuals in society, and that is a major reason for establishing the temple. “Religions both in the West and the East have long pushed the homosexual community into the margin,” he said. “But providence is benign, and love is given to all human beings as equals.” He also added that the temple is not merely for gay men, but lesbians as well.
Lu is planning religious gay weddings. He wants to deliver a message that religion recognises the union of homosexual couples and there is no reason why the state should not do the same.
