Stretched across a tree-peppered expanse in Southern Africa lies the ruins of Great Zimbabwe, a medieval stone city of astounding wealth. Located in the present-day country of Zimbabwe, it’s the site of the second largest settlement ruins in Africa. But its history is controversial, defined by decades of dispute about who built it and why. Breeanna Elliott explores the mystery of Great Zimbabwe.

PLURALITY & TULPAMANCY: What is a Tulpa? [Episode 5] Part 1

In episode 5 of Talking Backwards, we’re looking at a concept called Plurality of the mind, where through meditation one could possibly achieve a second separate, sentient consciousness. One community in particular has embraced this thought; through practice, devotion, and meditation, tulpamancers conjure these auxiliary personalities for many reasons- and some are finding it has the potential to treat some of the hardest to treat mental illnesses and disabilities we have today.

We speak with Jacob, a tulpamancer and researcher who has published research on the subject, and see how tulpamancy has positively impacted his life.

Hale County This Morning This Evening Official Trailer

ACADEMY AWARD NOMINEE – Best Documentary Feature

An inspired and intimate portrait of a place and its people, Hale County This Morning, This Evening looks at the lives of Daniel Collins and Quincy Bryant, two young African American men from rural Hale County, Alabama, over the course of five years. Collins attends college in search of opportunity while Bryant becomes a father to an energetic son in an open-ended, poetic form that privileges the patiently observed interstices of their lives. The audience is invited to experience the mundane and monumental, birth and death, the quotidian and the sublime. These moments combine to communicate the region’s deep culture and provide glimpses of the complex ways the African American community’s collective image is integrated into America’s visual imagination.

In his directorial debut, award-winning photographer and director RaMell Ross offers a refreshingly direct approach to documentary that fills in the gaps between individual black male icons. Hale County This Morning, This Evening allows the viewer an emotive impression of the Historic South, trumpeting the beauty of life and consequences of the social construction of race, while simultaneously offering a testament to dreaming despite the odds.

Proposals to Repeal Penal Exceptions from Slavery Bans Move Forward

I’m reading about how this year’s bills to repeal penal exceptions from state constitutional bans on slavery and involuntary servitude moved forward in both Utah and Nebraska.

In Utah, Rep. Sandra Hollins’ bill was unanimously passed by Utah’s House Judiciary Committee and moved to the floor for a vote. The entire Nebraska Legislature made a similar unanimous decision for Nebraska Sen. Justin Wayne’s bill on first reading (with 5 abstentions). Utah’s bill would need to be passed by two-thirds of both houses before being placed on the 2020 ballot, and Nebraska’s would have to pass the full Legislature two more times before being placed on the 2020 ballot.

This is good news. We could be on the edge of a full-fledged movement for fully-abolishing slavery in this country. I’m wondering when California will catch up to this.
