State Sen. Nikema Williams (SD-39) to Rep. Nikema Williams (GA-05)

The die has been cast: Senator Nikema Williams will now become the first woman ever nominated as a Democrat to the 5th congressional district of Georgia. This means a seat has been opened in SD39.

Nikema has worked her way up as an activist, from her earlier campus activism with Young Democrats of Georgia as National Committeewoman and Political Director in the 2000s to her work at Planned Parenthood Southeast. She served as Chair of the 13th Congressional District from 2007-2011, the youngest congressional chair ever elected in the DPG’s modern history at the time. She served as the DPG’s First Vice Chair from 2011-2019, stepping in temporarily as interim chair in 2013 upon the resignation of Mike Berlon. She then stepped into the electoral arena with her run for Vincent Fort’s seat in 2017, and then became the first Black woman Chair of the DPG in 2019.

Nikema, as the presumptive winner of the 5th district election, will also be the baby of the Georgia delegation at 41yo. For as long as no primary challenge is whipped up in the coming years, she has plenty of time to grow into the role.

I wonder how many YDG alums have become members of Congress, or have become officeholders at any level. We should be building more more Nikemas and other Democrats who are groomed and trained to run for moments like this. We need a well-oiled political machine.

George Chidi is right.

Let me state the obvious: whoever is responsible for storing material under the interstate that could melt a bridge had better still be in prison when Eleby gets out.

The Department of Transportation bears the true burden for this disaster. And that may be why state investigators quickly made an arrest of someone who doesn’t work in a business suit.

The second-day news stories weren’t looking at the chain of command, working their way down from GDOT Commissioner Russell McMurry, trying to figure out who had the legal authority to allow high-density plastic conduit to be stored under the highway.

Instead, it’s the easy story — pictures of the black guy in an orange jumpsuit that they’ve done a thousand times before. And, because it’s easy to report, everyone reported it, burying the real questions under a wave of sensational news about an alleged crackhead burning down I-85.

Something I and Jeremy noticed on the way out of Atlanta from the #GeorgiaUnites rally this afternoon: the beds and bags of all the homeless people living under both sides of a bridge on Coca Cola Pl SE, in freezing, windy, below-zero weather. Neither of us had seen just how bad, or horrific, homelessness is in Atlanta until that moment. And neither of us Muscogee residents could stand the cold on the Georgia State Capitol for 2 mere hours. I don’t know how to parse that sight.

OK, back to business

I was going to keep this on ice until next month…

But anyway, I’m back to business on LJ, and with a month’s accumulation of news. And oh, the many things which could happen within a month, too (search on Google News)!

1) Google and “The Great Firewall of China”

2) Google using Ubuntu for their servers.

3) China in Africa

4) Wazobia, new Linux distro from Nigeria

5) Beijing sponsors Red Flag Linux

6) “.Mac” for Ubuntu

7) New Warner Robins community on LJ

8) R.I.P. Coretta Scott King

9) Sir Tim Berners-Lee gets a blog

10) CBC gets a new, BBC-ish graphical setup

11) Jack Abramoff and Washington’s new clothes

12) Father Gerry is released for treatment in Miami

13) China is so rich that it can’t keep count!

14) I’m through with Oglethorpe; heading back to Warner Robins for freshman redux at MSC.

YES. That last one is a DEFINITE.

I’m sorry, but in the last semester of this utter failure of a freshman year, I have not had any money left to pay for books (NOTE: there are only 13 people on this campus who are paying their entire tuition, and I’m most definately NOT one of those 13). Plus, the Registrar, Financial Aid Office, and Business Office all gave both me and my mother much unnecessary grief in regards to financial aid, classes, and majors (I was sent on a merry-go-round by the first office to the second and third just to cancel a single class just last week).

I’m sorry, but this year is pretty much over.

I’m transferring out of this school with my high school transcripts rather than my college credits (I only received 5 from last semester). Possibly Macon State (public, so it’ll take my HOPE in full).

Finally, I simply cannot stand the liberal arts core curriculum, but then again, this IS a liberal arts college. Pretty much, the only reason why I came here in the first place was because this school sent me the most letters and responses. I was aiming for other, less feasible schools, such as the University of Western Ontario, CSU Monterey Bay, and others, and randomly so.

So I realize that I’ve made a terrible mistake in coming here at all.

I’ll be back in WR tomorrow for my b-day weekend.

Hopefully, I won’t have to see Atlanta’s shitty roads as much in the coming months.

Peace out.

4th (5th?) week in ATL

Hi, Just a few notes on what I’ve been doing since moving up here (in case you’re a bit too lazy to visit the LJ).

1. Went to my first convention on Saturday (Anime Weekend Atlanta). It was amazing (read the rundown at the blog), plus I met Solo and ShadowSaber (who were terribly kind to lend me a ride back to Oglethorpe since I was lacking in money for public transport via CCT; major, major props to you guys). I also came across gunmouth, who explained to me just how much artistry for commissions’ sake can be a pain in the ass to pursue on a regular basis. But the con was a blast and a half. As a result of making it there, I’m hoping to make it to this February’s Furry Weekend Atlanta as well as to next September’s DragonCon.

2. Been pondering the idea of the ideal open-source media player for weeks now. Latest twist: embedding VLC into the top of Firefox, in the exact same style as Real Player.

3. Found out that my particular orisha is probably Oxossi, the orisha of the hunt and the forest. He bears a strong affinity to Native Americans (of which I am a descendant), and he’s also very interested in things of other, more unusual natures, including (possibly) anthropomorphic characters.

4. Been in a constant reassessment of my presence on Livejournal, with creating communities and so forth.

5. Still pondering the question of my presence here at DA, although I’ve pretty much left this place to dilapidatory ruin.

6. I’ve got Gmail!!! Hit me up: raynenamibia@gmail.com
