With SOUTHERN SHADES OF BLUE, filmed in Moore County, NC, the Southern small-town, left-leaning voice is highlighted.

Episode 1 shows there are many more left-leaning voters in your small town than you might think and they are working their asses off.

While Southern values are often associated with only conservatives and conservative values, this interview series works to flip this narrative. The series shows how Southern and liberal values, such as kindness, family, and civil rights, overlap.

This interview series urges all small town progressives, liberals, and democrats to “come out of the closet” as it were politically, let your voice be known, and make sure your vote is counted.

We have less than one month to flip the country – let’s do it together!

PROJECT NOTE: These videos were filmed in the Fall of 2019, pre-Covid, pre-the murder of George Floyd by police. SOUTHERN SHADES OF BLUE stands with BIPOC in the fight against systemic racism and also urges everyone in the country to wear a mask.

DISCLAIMER: The opinions of all interviewees are their own opinions. Interviewees are not speaking on behalf of organizations mentioned in this video.

The Tiny Desk is working from home for the foreseeable future. Introducing NPR Music’s Tiny Desk (home) concerts, bringing you performances from across the country and the world. It’s the same spirit — stripped-down sets, an intimate setting — just a different space.

Oct. 1, 2020 | Bobby Carter — In this Tiny Desk (home) concert, R&B star Jhené Aiko coasts through an eight-song medley that plays like the ultimate nod to her legions of fans — fans who’ve been begging for a Tiny Desk for a long time.

The Los Angeles native’s star status is a result of her music’s versatility and vulnerability. Jhené Aiko Efuru Chilombo has carved out a space of her own over the past decade, despite a rapidly changing R&B landscape. As a songwriter, she leaves no stone unturned, explicitly expressing her struggle, joy and sexuality while always administering the vibe.

Her latest album, Chilombo, released just before the pandemic hit the U.S., doubled down and leaned into the therapeutic nature of her songs — and that same aesthetic fuels her Tiny Desk. Backed by an ensemble of masked players, Aiko bookends her set with a sound bath of singing bowls that’s peace personified through sound.

Lyrics:
[Verse 1: Alicia Keys]
Yeah, well
I never thought I’d find it
But it’s always been clear
All this time that I’ve been tryin’
You were standin’ right here
I never thought I’d go far
And all this time I’ve been fightin’
‘Cause everything was so hard
You didn’t give up on me, baby, no

[Pre-Chorus: Alicia Keys]
I know you got me
There’s nothin’ like your love
You know I got you

[Chorus: Alicia Keys]
And if I could stay, I’ll stay here forever
And if I could be here, we’ll be here together
‘Cause did you know that you save me?
Did you know that you save me from the fall?
Did you know that you save me?
‘Cause we’ve been through it all
And I owe it all to you, I owe it all
I owe it all to you, I owe you all

[Post-Chorus: Alicia Keys & Snoh Aalegra]
I know that you rock with me
You know I’ll be rockin’ with you
Know that you rock with me
You know I’ll be rockin’ with you

[Verse 2: Snoh Aalegra]
Needed to be reminded
‘Cause it wasn’t all clear
No reason to be hidin’
‘Cause you’re standin’ right here
I just wanna go far
All this time I’ve been fightin’
‘Cause everything is so hard
But you won’t give up on me, hey, yeah

[Pre-Chorus: Snoh Aalegra]
I know you got me
And there’s nothin’ like your love
You know I got you

[Chorus: Snoh Aalegra]
And if I could stay, I’ll stay here forever
And if I could be here, we’ll be here together
‘Cause did you know that you save me?
Did you know that you save me from the fall?
Did you know that you save me?
‘Cause we’ve been through it all
And I owe it all to you, I owe it all
And I owe it all to you, I owe you all

[Post-Chorus: Alicia Keys & Snoh Aalegra]
I know that you rock with me
You know I’ll be rockin’ with you
Know that you rock with me
You know I’ll be rockin’ with you
I know that you rock with me
You know I’ll be rockin’ with you
Know that you rock with me
You know I’ll be rockin’ with you
