OK, a rundown of Friday, Saturday, and early, early Sunday

1. I was stoned for the first time at Chi Phi. Yay me! (That 5th puff, though, shook my lungs up something terrible)

2. I went to Anime Weekend Atlanta on Saturday. Couldn’t find atmanryu (dude, where were you?!), but I did come across dagucoon (he was wearing a kimono with a racoon head, tail, and paws; I recognized him from both those particular attributes as well as his talking to the convention press concerning the furry fandom), and I also came across http://shadowsaber.deviantart.com (and her husband, Solo), http://gunmouth.deviantart.com, Danny Valentini (http://2wcOnline.com), and (*possibly*) Fred Perry (“Gold Digger” comic series).

3. Because of money (which was seriously lacking in quantity, I admit), I was stuck at the Convention Centre (in Cobb County!) into the wee, wee hours of the morning. Of course, I guess you can say that the freaks come out at (late, late) night, since 1. they were having a light rave (Oh….my….God, that was incredible, in fact, more so when I took off my glasses for a good 10 minutes or so), 2. two or three drunkards (not entirely unexpected at such an event) got a little too antagonistic towards hotel and convention security (I was scared as hell, might I mention), and 3. people were going *wild* (myself included, kinda) over the showcasing of Final Fantasy 7: Advent Children. Most of the people to whom I talked concerning the movie were nearly *demanding* that I play the accompanying game in order to see the full extent of the impact that this most legendary of sequels has had since its debut several years back (most of them also regarded the succeeding sequels as either non-canon or simply “fanon”).

Sidenote: OK, here’s where I draw a comparison between the aforementioned movie and the (primarily-)American-made Final Fantasy: The Spirits Within. The makers of Advent Children were probably placing less importance upon some areas in CGI-filmmaking than were the makers of Spirits Within; for instance, on a personally-seeming basis, FF7:AD concentrated more upon function than facade in regard to the graphics (in other words, the graphics in the movie were made to move as fluidly as possible [in order to get the more desired effect of ultrarealism], rather than to gear them so much to reality that the characters and scenes would look more like rigid, half-lifeless humanoid robots rather than simple human beings). Such a difference in energy and the allocation thereof is probably what usually separates Japanese (or, dare I say, Asian) films from their American (or, dare I say further, Western) counterparts, be it live action, animation, CGI, or those four possible ways in which you can combine either or all of the aforementioned three.

4. Vic Mignogna’s live action Full Metal Alchemist Fan Film was, for me, highly-engrossing (since, I could tell, Vic fits a headful of goldish-blond, with the accompanying ponytail, rather well!). Great voice actor, plus a great job of writing and directing it himself.

5. The AMV showcase was awesome (and surprising, since 1. there was a tie for the best video of the year, and 2. one of the winning vids was centered around…well…rainbows. The video was beautiful with its rainbows, so props to the guy who made it [and won]).

6. Let me say *again*: the light show was AWESOME, DAMMIT!!!

OK, well thats the rundown of my first-ever convention and the accompanying weekend events…personal headlines, you could call them.

Peace!

  1. oh! and if you can help me. try to find out the fur bashers at the con. we think they are responsible for the bogus flyers and we want to sue them. but don’t say that when looking. just ask around for them

    1. You mean the ones which say “FWA” on the front?

I saw a few of those flyers, including one which had Colonel Sanders (from KFC) with kittyears.

I really didn’t get the point with those, but I didn’t come across any bashers while I was there, at least, not from what I remember. Plus, I was only there for only one day, since I was rather short of pocket change after paying for basic admittance.

If there was a way by which I could get up there (and get back), I’d be glad to help.

      1. Now that I think about it, AWA was the perfect opportunity for such individuals to spread some propoganda.

Its not the largest con in Atlanta (that would be DragonCon, I believe), but since it was mostly targeting the anime audience, which is often related in a few areas to the furry/anthro fandom, it would’ve made perfect sense to spread this bootlegged shit through the mostly non-furry/anthro audience which probably comprised the majority of attendees.

Furthermore, they probably knew that there were many members of the furry/anthro fandom in the audience who would reasonably be offended by such; having come from some reputedly atypical cesspool of misanthropicism like Something Awful, it was probably the perfect way of antagonizing those select attendees.

It’s a stupid thing to do, I agree, but they had their way nonetheless, which is rather unfortunate.

      2. Well, on Friday I learned that one fur (whose name I can’t remember, yet I can recognize by face) actually talked (by accident) with one of these “fur haters”; it turns out that the hater wussed off the moment he found out the guy he was ranting about furs with was a fur himself.

And cleverly screwed up one at the recent AC to the point of getting the hater kicked out the convention by security.

So yeah, all mouth, no balls…

      3. Wow, talk about irony…

So far as I’ve seen, its been nothing but dialogue, dialogue, and even more dialogue, and thankfully, it hasn’t resorted to the more violent manifestations which have been depicted rather vividly in those famous flame wars for which Livejournal is known.

Once it does get to that point (and it may in the near future), in which blood does get let, its not going to be pretty.

  2. Hey– just joined up on this LJ and saw there was an AWA post. I went. ‘Twas fun. I was Misato from Neon Genesis Evangelion on Saturday if any of you might have seen me wandering around. That is all. ^_^

      1. Ahh, I saw that second costume floating around Artists Alley someplace.

I mean, I did see several Inuyashas in there (all clad in the characteristic red and white), but I do *slimly* remember that one (though I’ve never seen NGE myself).

      2. In addition, I saw at least 10 Narutos, 20 or less Edwards, a guy who dressed in an inflated rendition of Alphonse, two or three boxes (must’ve been a running joke), and a couple of Kakashis (in fact, the first girl I asked for directions from was dressed almost *completely* like Kakashi, even down to the infamous pupils [contact lenses, of course], although she bore a sword, which I don’t usually identify as being a weapon of choice for his character).

Plus, I passed by a small conclave of Inus, Kagomes, and at least one eye-glassed Shippo (she jumped up to greet a Kagome whom she knew rather personally, squealing “KAGOME!” to my passing, delightful appeal to the sheer cuteness of the sound. Cute…).
