Found my cell phone!; Try out Solaris?; Rant of the day

Yay, I finally came across my cell phone today (had lost it for the entirety of last week). What timing; now Mom can yell at me about my bi-weekly off-campus sojourns….argh.

Well, in the meantime, I’ve been looking at OSes again. This time, I’ve decided to take a look outside of Linux in general (and Ubuntu, as hard as it was), and possibly, upon the gaining of a new powercord, partition my hard drive with a Solaris 10 Boot CD.

Solaris, I say?

Yep. There’s actually a world outside of Windows, Linux, AND Mac! Isn’t that wonderful?!?!

*clears throat*

Well, just found out that the Movie night at PKZP’s is cancelled. *frowns* Oh well, at least we’re good for the weekend while at Hyperion’s.

And other stuff…..

Peace out!

  1. “Getting another OS is like buying a new house where none of your existing furniture can be used. Might be better but you have to go out and get new furniture which 98% of your guests can’t use.”

    1. True true.

Plus, Solaris is one of those OSes which you may have heard about at some point in the past, but was easily overwhelmed by the mentionings of Windows, Mac and Linux.

Maybe if it were more popularly known…..well then again, Sun has been insistent upon Solaris’ identification with the Linux crowd (which is why you have both FreeBSD and Solaris versions of many Linux apps, although those two OSes are Unix-like but are separate from Linux).

      But why so?

If the main concentration of the Linux OS is the eternal development of the kernel proper (and note that the binary and dependency standards very every 10th distro as well), then no wonder the trouble that most software creators (even the non-proprietary open-sourcers) would have to go through in order to provide their software to the Linux crowd.

But Solaris, with it, just like Mac, being only one distribution from one company with one single binary and dependency standard, has no excuse. Applications, Multimedia, and other such perks should be available to most Solaris users (or, unlike Apple’s media format for Mac, those applications and multimedia standards could be open-sourced), thus driving up the viability of the OS amongst other potential, prospective users. The lack of such tells me that something is wrong with Solaris by itself.
