The technology that’s replacing the green screen

The green screen is a Hollywood staple. Should it be?

It’s easy to complain about overreliance on special effects, but for projects that require impossible-to-film environments or have incredibly expensive shots, how do you get the flexibility of green screens without the drawbacks?

Charmaine Chan has worked on one of the possible answers. Vox’s Phil Edwards spoke to her about her career and how it’s at the forefront of a big technological shift. As a compositor for venerable effects house Industrial Light and Magic (ILM), she’s worked on films like The Last Jedi, assembling various digital elements into a beautiful, seamless image. Her job changed on The Mandalorian, one of the first shows to use ILM’s upgrade for the green screen: LED panels that used video game engine technology to place a realistic-looking world behind the actors.

It was a huge improvement, because green screens actually have a lot of drawbacks. Removing the green screen is never as quick as visual effects artists would hope. It also casts green light upon the set and actors. Even substitutes for a green screen, like projecting an image onto a screen behind the actor, fail to dynamically respond to camera movements the way they would in the real world.

ILM’s solution fixes a lot of those problems, and it also led to creative breakthroughs in which the old Hollywood order of a TV show or movie, in which VFX came last, was suddenly reversed. Now, artists like Charmaine are alongside actors, set designers, and other crew members during filming. That collaboration means that this technology doesn’t just eliminate a screen — it eliminates a creative barrier.

🕰 Best time to visit? Autumn or Winter (as it is when they’re at their fluffiest!)

↪ P.S.: If you hate zoo environments or any sort of animal enclosure no matter if the conditions are well and good (as per what I witness during my visit), I suggest that you don’t visit this place or it will make you uncomfortable. As for me, I just try to keep an open mind; plus, I don’t immediately shun every animal park, especially if the animals are well-cared for (unless it’s otherwise — do let me know). If it helps to note, foxes are one of the few animals who don’t suffer any type of stress when under captivity — but of course, I do know that it’s ideal to rather let them be in the wild…

Yet again, their chances of survival in the wild is very slim especially with today’s times. Looking at the facts, a fox in the wild has an average life span of 2-4 years only because of diseases, hunting practices and road accidents; but in places like this Fox Village, they can live up to 14 years. (Besides, you cannot imagine the number of people who would ‘kill’ for fox fur, nor the number of people who do fox hunting for fun/sport like the UK for example).

If you want to learn more about the foxes here, please read my blog post: https://ift.tt/2lN7tVx

That Raccoon Cafe In Seoul Everyone Is Hyped About

Inside a raccoon cafe at Hondae, Seoul.

*The entrance fee costs 6~7000 won which is about 5.29 US dollars, and buying drinks is optional. I recommend that you don’t buy drinks unless you’re extremely thirsty, because the guideline says that you should put your drinks up whenever you see a raccoon around your table. If you already bought one, make sure you put it onto somewhere high up.*

These adorable fat, fluffy raccoons run around making troubles literally every second.

With over 288 animal cafes in South Korea, there are some controversies over these industries becoming insanely popular since 2016. Wild mammals including raccoons need a minimum of few hundred㎢ for living space. Putting these animals inside some ㎡ cafes can be extremely stressful, animal professionals say. Plus, if these industries go bankrupt, the animals left behind are likely to end up in animal farms or shelters.

Nonetheless, if these cafes are kept clean with healthy animals, and visitors follow the guidelines with great care, it is definitely one of the best places to visit in Seoul, South Korea.

Don’t forget to wear a hoodie with lot of pockets. Raccoons go CRAZY over digging pockets, pulling hoodie straps, and so on.

Capitalism vs. Freedom

According to the standard account, capitalism—whatever your criticisms of it—is synonymous with freedom. Other systems, we are told, necessitate central planning by undemocratic bureaucracies. But what if that’s not true? Zephyr Teachout explains how capitalism puts us at the whims of employers, bosses, and huge corporations, despite its claims.

What is Sakuga?
Sakuga (作画) literally means drawing in Japanese. But Sakuga also means “artistically impressive animation”.

What is a Sakuga MAD?
MAD stands for Music Anime Douga (Douga means video in Japanese). It’s the same as an AMV. Sakuga MADs are compilations of great animation.
